What is magnesium?

Magnesium is an essential mineral and the eleventh most abundant element in the human body. Around 60% is stored in your bones, about 27% in muscle, and the rest in soft tissue and blood. Magnesium in the blood (serum magnesium) accounts for less than 1% of your total, which is why a standard blood test is often a poor indicator of actual status.

Biochemically, magnesium works mainly as a cofactor for enzymes — it is required for over 300 enzymatic reactions, including energy production, protein synthesis, DNA replication and muscle contraction. It is also your body's natural calcium regulator: in muscle fibres, calcium triggers contraction and magnesium triggers relaxation. Who is most at risk of low magnesium?

Magnesium deficiency is more common than many people realise. You may be at higher risk if you eat a diet high in processed and refined foods; drink alcohol regularly; are under chronic stress; are over 50; have type 2 diabetes; have a gastrointestinal condition such as Crohn's, coeliac or IBD; take proton pump inhibitors, diuretics or certain antibiotics; or exercise intensively or have a physically demanding job.

Magnesium contributes to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It is required for ATP-dependent processes — ATP is biologically active mainly as a magnesium-bound complex (Mg-ATP). Magnesium also helps activate several B vitamins involved in energy pathways and supports normal blood glucose regulation, which contributes to stable energy.

Muscle function and cramps

Magnesium supports normal muscle function by acting as a natural counterbalance to calcium: calcium signals muscles to contract, magnesium helps them relax. Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Around 60% of the body's magnesium is stored in bone, where it forms part of the mineral structure and influences bone-building and bone-resorbing cells. Low status is associated with reduced bone mineral density and higher osteoporosis risk. Magnesium is also involved in the enzymes that convert vitamin D to its active form, so low status may affect vitamin D's role in bone health.

Heart health

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, including the heart muscle. Acting as a natural calcium antagonist in vascular smooth muscle, it supports healthy blood vessel tone and normal cardiovascular function, and higher circulating levels have been associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk. With potassium, magnesium supports a normal heart rhythm, and supplementation has been linked with modest reductions in blood pressure, particularly where it is elevated.

Are there different types of magnesium supplement?

Magnesium supplements come in many chemical forms, and the form significantly affects absorption, tolerability and which tissues and functions benefit most. Most people are not aware of this and assume one magnesium supplement is much like another. It is not.

The most commonly used forms fall into two broad categories: inorganic salts (such as magnesium oxide and carbonate) and organic compounds, which include chelated forms where magnesium is bound to an organic molecule such as an amino acid or organic acid. Chelated forms generally have higher bioavailability and are better tolerated, though some inorganic forms have specific advantages — magnesium oxide, for example, carries by far the highest elemental magnesium content, which makes a meaningful dose achievable in a compact serving.

Magnesium is required for over 300 enzymatic reactions — more than any other single mineral — spanning energy production, protein synthesis, DNA repair, nerve function and muscle contraction.

ATP, your body's energy currency, is only biologically active as Mg-ATP. This makes magnesium not just important for energy but essential: without it, cells literally cannot produce energy in the normal way.

Stress depletes magnesium, and low magnesium amplifies stress. Cortisol drives magnesium out through the kidneys, and the resulting deficit makes the nervous system more reactive. Breaking the cycle requires consistent daily magnesium.

Magnesium is required to activate vitamin D. Without it, the enzyme that converts vitamin D to its active form cannot work properly — so if you supplement with vitamin D, you also need adequate magnesium.

Intensive farming, soil acidification and leaching have reduced magnesium in many agricultural soils over the past century, which review evidence suggests has lowered magnesium levels in some foods versus historical values.

A standard blood test measures serum magnesium — less than 1% of your total body magnesium. You can have a normal blood test and still be deficient, so symptoms are often a more reliable indicator than blood tests alone.

Magnesium taurate

Combines magnesium with taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid found in high concentrations in cardiac and nervous tissue. Magnesium bisglycinate (glycinate)

A chelated form where magnesium is bound to two glycine molecules. It is often well tolerated and may be less likely than some salts to cause loose stools, though responses vary. Magnesium malate

How safe is magnesium?

Magnesium is generally very safe at recommended doses. The EFSA-derived upper level for supplemental magnesium from readily dissociable salts is 250mg per day, based on the dose at which some people begin to experience loose stools. Neutrient Magnesium provides 244mg of elemental magnesium per serving, within this supplemental guideline.

The most common side effect of magnesium supplementation is loose stools or mild digestive discomfort, particularly with forms such as citrate or oxide in larger single doses. Because Neutrient Magnesium uses a multi-form approach, it may be better tolerated by some people than a single high dose of one form, though individual responses vary.

Individuals with kidney disease should not supplement with magnesium without medical advice, as the kidneys are responsible for excreting excess magnesium. In healthy people, any excess from supplementation is efficiently cleared.
